about
A degenerate love song of defiance and acceptance, “The Wheel, the Spade, the Stars in Motion” thrusts the listener through a looking glass, into a world where everything frays at the seams and burns forever madly. Vignettes of love are spotted and declared as thorny guitars prick and snick above a wonky bassline, before erupting in a cataclysmic cry to arms: “Dig deep in the hole for a love to call your own!” Yes! Love can conquer all and blossom uncontrollably, even in the underworld.
lyrics
THE WHEEL, THE SPADE, THE STARS IN MOTION
The men made of swords
Converge by the green
Kiss their dog-eared lovers
Historically keen
When daylight turns to dreaming
When the moon outshines the sun
Sleeping time is over, the carnival’s begun
Unsanitary sisters in volatile dress
Meet their deloused spouses
with calculated breath
They fat themselves for maggots
Slow death on a spoon
behold a hundred million moths
Heading for the moon
At last we fall in love
At last we fall in love
at last we’re free to fall in love
At last we fall in love
The maid was in the garden
Disfigured by a bird
That reactionary raptor
Left her undeterred
The specksioneer made it clear
harpoon held aloft
Declaring that his love for her
could melt the permafrost
The poets they were scrabbling
for matches that were wet
dismantling their Ouija boards
with rusty bayonets
When feeding time is over
When wrongs outnumber rights
You’ll find yourself wanting
At the carnival tonight
At last we fall in love
At last we fall in love
at last we’re free to fall in love
At last we fall in love
Hades - there I will go
Is that too far to-
Hades - that I don’t know
Is that too far to-
Dig deep in the hole
For a love to call your own
Dig deep in the hole
Dig deep, dig deep
Pull this phantom thread
watch the spirit world unspool
I’ll hold you like Pieta
By the missionary pool
Where everyone is ugly
All dipsos dispossessed
Where visionary fish will remind us that we’re blessed
At last we fall in love
At last we fall in love
at last we’re free to fall in love
At last we fall in love
Hades - there I will go
Is that too far to-
Hades - that I don’t know
Is that too far to-
Dig deep in the hole
For a love to call your own
Dig deep in the hole
Dig deep, dig deep
Time is long and time is short
Be my Boyne, my Agincourt
Time is short and time is long
Be my Bulge, my Marathon
Time is good and time is bad
Be my Somme, my Stalingrad
