about
A roaring smokestack of a song, ‘In the Cosmic Hour’ is a macabre requiem for those strange moments of self-reflection amidst the chaos of the world where we don’t quite feel ourselves, where we question who is in charge of the decisions we make and the feelings we have.
Prophetic yet incoherent, malevolent yet blessed, ‘In the Cosmic Hour’ is a subversive provocation, exhilarating and delirious. A place where post-punk and art rock converge: Captain Beefheart meets The Fall, The Cramps meet QOTSA, Pixies meet Roxy Music. This song perfectly captures what ESOP do as a band-cum-demolition team - a driving, gritty drum and bass combo, needle-like insectoid guitars, and agitated preacher man vocals. Sometimes spooky, never dull.
lyrics
IN THE COSMIC HOUR
The world has changed – well, I don’t like what I’m told
Like a house made of prawns, it will not hold
I couldn’t handle rebellion
Regret, regret, regret
The party wasn’t over when I put myself to bed
I was under the influence of a black static moon
Weird tides waned, the watusi was imminent
I was out of my element, I was feeling inelegant
Never felt so irrelevant, so maligned or malevolent
In the cosmic hour
I didn’t feel so good
I will be good again
The slant rain hates me, punctuates the night
Rage on, right on, rage on, alright!
I was under the influence of something I ate
Screaming “Andale! Andale! Get over it! Over it!”
And to the shock of my companions
I ate the ghost of Marlon Brando
It was too much to handle – this feeling will pass
Like a lit Roman candle – the flame won’t last
In the cosmic hour
I didn’t feel so good
I will be good again
